ARE YOU A YOUNG WRITER?

The Rotary Club of Wangaratta is proud to present the Wangaratta Young Writers’ Award for 2018.

The award encourages you to develop your capacity and imagination through your writing.

All young people between the ages of 10-19 years are encouraged to put pen to paper and enter an original piece of writing in one of the following categories:

Prose [no more than 2000]

Poetry OR song lyrics [no more than 50 lines]

Digital format [one page of website or blog content]

CATEGORIES

Upper Primary: Years 5 and 6

Lower Secondary: Years 7, 8 and 9

Upper Secondary: Years 10, 11 and 12 and young people not at school aged 19 and under

PRIZES TO THE VALUE OF $1800

Winners will receive an invitation to the award presentation to be held following the Wang Lit Fest Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June 2018 where prizes will be presented.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Wangaratta Young Writers Award is run by the Rotary Club of Wangaratta and supported by the Rural City of Wangaratta. This inaugural award is to be held annually as a part of the Wang Lit Fest featuring the Rotary Wangaratta Book Fair.

We want to unearth local talent and inspire young people to be creative.

The award will recognise writing in three categories:

  • Prose
  • Poetry or song lyrics
  • Writing for a digital format

In each of these categories there will be a first, second and third prize.

COMPETITION INFORMATION

Public Use of Entries:

Winning entries will be published in The Chronicle and may be used for future promotion of the award. The winners will also be compiled in an anthology to be displayed in the Wangaratta Library and added to the library collection.

Entries are not retained and will not be returned.

Photocopies of original work will be accepted.

ENTRIES CLOSE @ 5PM ON 13 APRIL 2018

Entries will be judged on originality of theme, development of the story and quality of the writing (not quantity).

The judges are looking for the use of words to create feeling and imagery. Pictures will not be taken into account.

ENTRY CHECKLIST:

  • I am a student OR a sibling of, who attends school in the Rural City of Wangaratta or I am registered for home schooling
  • I am not attending school but am aged 19 or under and living in the Rural City of Wangaratta
  • My entry is solely my own words
  • I edited my own work
  • I have only submitted one entry (as only one entry can be submitted)
  • I have not copied my ideas form film, television or books
  • My entry is no more than 2000 words
  • My entry is handwritten or typed (if typed must be done by the entrant alone)
  • My entry is accompanied by a completed entry form
